Pieces recognized in the 2018 Jade Ring Contest have been published in Creative Wisconsin, a literary journal. Congratulations to all!

The Creative Wisconsin Literary Journal for 2018 is available by sending a check for $10 to Nancy Rafal at PO Box 340, Baileys Harbor,  WI 54202

2019 JADE RING CONTEST AND CREATIVE WISCONSIN COLLABORATION

All finalists in the Jade Ring Contest (four categories, first, second, third and three honorable mentions, that’s 24 entries) will receive the following:

  • First place winners receive a Jade Ring or cash prize, a certificate and recognition at the Jade Ring award ceremony held in Fall 2019; all other finalists receive cash award and/or certificate.
  • All winners will be published in Creative Wisconsin Anthology. By submitting your work, you are granting WWA permission to publish it in Creative Wisconsin. Author retains all rights following publication. If your entry is accepted for publication elsewhere after you have entered, you must withdraw the piece from consideration.
  • Each winner will receive a complimentary copy of Creative Wisconsin Anthology containing their award-winning piece.
  • Creative Wisconsin Anthology will be available on the WWA website and from the publisher.


Submission guidelines

WWA membership not required
Submission dates: March 1, 2019 to May 31, 2019
Finalists will be notified by July 1, 2019

CATEGORIES

Fiction: short story, flash, novel excerpt written for adults  - up to 2,000 words

Non-fiction: article, memoir, essay, nostalgia - up to 2,000 words

Poetry: all forms - up to 75 lines

Humor: fiction or non-fiction - up to 800 words

(Please note: all entries must be original and unpublished in any form or medium including online publications)

 

PRIZES

First place:                                        $100.00 or Jade Ring for first-time winners

Second place                                    $70.00

Third place                                        $40.00

Three honorable mentions             No cash prize

 

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

Each manuscript must include the category and title in header at the top of each page.

Do not include author’s name on entry. Judges review blind entries.

Documents must be double spaced with one-inch margins, Times New Roman size 12 font is recommended.

Poetry can be either single or double spaced. Respect word/line length requirements.

Submit manuscript as Microsoft Word document only.

Do not include drawings or pictures with your manuscript.

 

JUDGES’ FEEDBACK (optional)

If you would like to receive the judge’s feedback, add $10.00 per critique on the entry form payment area. Feedback will be returned by e-mail after the fall conference.

 

ENTRY FEE

Entry fee WWA members: $20.00

Entry fee non-members: $35.00

Enter and Join WWA for $50.00 (save $15.00)

 

FINAL NOTES

Please proofread your entries for accuracy of spelling, grammar and punctuation.

No vulgar language or erotica accepted.

All entries are reviewed blindly by our Judges.

WWA reserves the right to cancel any category with too few entries or to omit an award when entries lack merit; entrants will be notified and fees returned.

Failure to follow ALL of the above guidelines may disqualify your entry.

OUR JUDGES:

Poetry: Max Garland is Professor Emeritus at UW-Eau Claire and recently served as Writer-in-Residence for the city of Eau Claire. His latest book is The Word We Used for It, and was winner of the 2017-18 Brittingham Poetry Prize. Max is the former Poet Laureate of Wisconsin. garlanm@uwec.edu 

Fiction: Judy Bridges is “The Boss” in the Wisconsin writing community. She founded Redbird Writing Studio in Milwaukee in 1993, and included much of her writing wisdom in her good-natured guide to the craft, Shut Up & Write!  jb@redbirdstudio.com

Nonfiction: Jim Landwehr has five books, The Portland House, Dirty Shirt, Written Life, Reciting From Memory, and On a Road. He is poet laureate for the Village of Wales, WI. jimlandwehr@att.net

Humor: Mel Miskimen is an award-winning writer and Moth storyteller. Her book, Sit. Stay. Heal, was a selection on WPR’s Chapter A Day. Modern Dog Magazine called it a must read. mcmiskimen@gmail.com
