"A wildflower must bloom where the wind plants the seed."
Set in the Depression era, this is a thought-provoking coming-of-age story about two sisters, Daisy and Willa Grace, and their unbreakable bond that transcends their different personalities and goals in life. Together, they leave their struggling family farm in Northern Wisconsin for the big city of Chicago to get jobs to help support their family back home. Their dreams of a future filled with new opportunities and a better life for all are shattered, however, when they encounter some heartbreaking experiences. The worst is when Daisy contracts tuberculosis and is isolated in a sanatorium. Their sisterly bond helps them to find the courage and resilience to navigate the rough waters ahead to the very end of their journey.
This is a beautifully written and heartfelt novel that evokes an emotional response. The author vividly describes what life was like during the Depression era for many families, particularly those struggling with the harsh realities of widespread tuberculosis while trying to support their families and save the family farm.
I highly recommend this intriguing novel. It's a step back in time to another era.
