Set in the very near future, St. Izzy of F Street tells the story of Sonny, a young D.C. journalist, trying to cling to his job. At the same time, even the biggest and best newspapers are being replaced by AI-generated fake news and Online Alarmists. When Sonny meets Izzy, a charismatic unhoused person claiming “the end is near” and offering up Nostradamus-like prophesies, he sees an opportunity for a great story, one that might launch his career. Before long, Sonny, his hacker roommate, and his social media whiz girlfriend have created a viral online news site promoting Izzy’s doomsday predictions with subscriptions that make them overnight millionaires. Naturally, the site garners the unwanted attention of the FBI, and the bloom of success is soon replaced with the fear of exposure and possible jail time. This psychological suspense novel propels the reader into the depths of the dark web, political instability, the threat of the FBI, and the dangerous street life of the unhoused. I can give this the highest compliment for any thriller: I did not see that coming! Five stars for Robb Grindstaff’s St. Izzy of F Street.
