Kimberly Anne Conway shares her story in a frank, easily readable, and, in fact, often humorous manner. She describes her struggles as “setbacks, depression, anxiety, and fear, and how each affects everyday life.” In fact, Conway paints a poignant picture of how an individual copes with a lifetime of mental health challenges. Her language is simple and the chapters are short, lending the reader a book that is accessible to read.
The challenges that Kimberly describes in her memoir are ones that many face and she is honest and frank in her depiction. “I hope you have found some comfort in my experience,” she writes. Indeed, her boldness in describing the traumatic events that stretch sometimes from her childhood up to almost the current time is enlightening for persons going through similar struggles.
Conway writes in an informal language, speaking intimately to the reader and drawing in those who want to learn about eating disorders, sexual abuse, and what it is to be gay, among other topics, from a woman who grew up in the 60s in the Midwest. Her story, while singular, is at the same time one that rings true to anyone dealing with those concerns.
